Peter  T.  King
In 2004, with the war in Iraq underway, Rep. Peter T. King (NY) claimed that American Muslim leaders were not properly assisting with the “war on terror”. He suggested that a great majority of U.S. mosques were controlled by Islamic fundamentalists, “an enemy living amongst us”. His comments were denounced by the Council on American-Islamic Relations as “Islamic bigotry”.
On March 10, 2011, as chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, King held his first hearing, entitled “The Extent of Radicalization in the American Muslim community and that Community’s Response”. Rep. Keith Ellison, one of two Muslims in the U.S. Congress, gave emotional testimony, recounting the story of a Muslim-American firefighter who died on September 11, 2001. Los Angeles County sheriff Lee Baca testified that claims of non cooperation by American Muslims were baseless. The ranking Democrat on the Committee rejected King’s premise, and requested that the hearings be broadened to include other extremist groups in America.  NEXT >
