Bridgegate Sampler I: Lemon Aide: Kelly
In 2010, Bridget Anne Kelly became Director of Legislative Relations under Governor Chris Christie. In April 2013, she was appointed his Deputy Chief of Staff.
On August 13, 2013, Kelly emailed David Wildstein, a Christie appointee at the Port Authority, “Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee.” “Got it”, he replied. On September 9th, two of three access lanes to the George Washington Bridge were closed, resulting in gridlock in Fort Lee, New Jersey.
On January 8, 2014, the emails became public, and on January 9th, Chris Christie held a press conference. He called Kelly “stupid”, telling reporters that he had her fired “because she lied to me”. Christie hired a law firm to perform an internal investigation, which determined that Kelly and Wildstein were the sole architects of the bridge fiasco. Key figures had not been interviewed. Kelly’s rumored relationship with Christie staffer Bill Stepien was presented as a factor in her “subjective motivations and state of mind”. The report, which cost New Jersey taxpayers over $1 million, was blasted for its sexist treatment of Kelly.
