Bridgegate Sampler II: Confit of Interest: Samson
In February 2011, Chris Christie named David Samson Chairman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, an unpaid position. The Port Authority has an $8.2 billion annual budget and over 7000 employees. It operates airports, tunnels, bridges, marine terminals, ports, and the PATH rail transit system. Samson previously served as general counsel to the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, New Jersey Attorney General, counsel to the Christie gubernatorial campaign and chairman of the Christie transition committee.
Wolff & Samson, David Samson’s law and lobbying firm, has represented state agencies including the New Jersey Turnpike Authority and the New Jersey Transit Corporation. As Chairman of the Port Authority, Samson cast votes benefitting these and other clients, an apparent conflict of interest.
In February 2012, Samson voted to give Wolff & Samson client NJ Transit a $1-per-year lease on a Port Authority owned park-and-ride lot in North Bergen. NJ Transit had previously paid $900k per year. The 49-year lease would have meant millions less in revenue for the Port Authority. A re-vote has been ordered. READ MORE >
