In 2000, Chris Christie served as campaign lawyer for George W. Bush in New Jersey. In 2001, Bush appointed him U.S. Attorney General for New Jersey, a position he held from 2002-2008. Focusing on public corruption, his office convicted or won guilty pleas from 130 public officials, both Republican and Democratic, at the state, county and local levels.
In 2009, Christie was elected Governor of New Jersey. As the keynote speaker at the 2012 Republican National Convention, he was considered a star in the party. Christie became a national hero during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, famously hugging President Obama and stating that he didn’t care about politics. The Romney campaign felt it contributed to their loss. On November 5, 2013, Christie defeated Democrat Barbara Buono by a 22% margin.
