American Bread: Soldier / Veteran
Veterans across the country are dying while waiting to be seen by a doctor for physical and mental health related issues.
According to the Office of Public and Intergovernmental Affairs, the backlog of claims in 2014 stands at 344,000, down from 611,000 last year. (A backlogged claim is one that is pending for more than 125 days.) Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Eric Shinseki has made 2015 the goal for eliminating the claims backlog.
This reduction, a seemingly major achievement for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, was overshadowed by news of a supposed secret waiting list at the Phoenix VA hospital. The list was meant to hide extended delays for services and treatments for 1400 veterans. It is estimated that 40 veterans died waiting for an appointment. Similar stories have emerged in Colorado, Illinois and Texas. Some suggest that the 14-day wait limit imposed by the VA led to falsified records. The Inspector General of the VA is investigating.
On May 15, 2014, Shinseki testified before the Senate Veteran’s Affairs Committee. “Any allegation, any adverse incident like this makes me mad as hell”, he said. “We can, and we must do better.” He has since resigned.
